Marina directories

| | Comments (2)

As part of our cruise north, Joy and I are compiling a list of marinas between Pittwater and the Whitsundays (particularly from Mooloolaba north). I'll post relevant URL's here as a reference.

Ship2Shore directoryI picked up a "ship2shore" marine directory at a recent boat show. It has a reasonably complete list of marinas including minimaps of where they are located and pretty comprehensive details of their facilities.

It's a pity their web site is not nearly as complete as the paper directory and tries hard to get you to subscribe for $25. The free paper directory seems a better deal...

PortFocus has a list of Queensland marinas with Lat & Long as well as links to Marina web sites. In a similar vein, Marina-Info has a list of marinas. Unfortunately neither is very complete and of course while we're sailing, internet access is very limited and/or expensive.

So for the moment,  the paper  "Ship2Shore" directory is our best bet. Leave a comment if you have another source of information.

UPDATE [Aug 4]: Joy and I picked up the latest version of the Ship2Shore directory at the recent Sydney Boat Show, it even covers WA now.

Dear John,

I picked up some of your comments by accident just recently and was of course interested by them.

As you can tell from the publication... we are not funded but do endeavour to cater for a very broad section relating to the Australian Marine Industry. You may find as you travel along the coast a number of other uses for this modest publication. Every year it has expanded to cover a wider area...yet it remains FREE. (Originally QLD only, then East Coast and 5th will cover all Oz, NZ & some Sth Pacific areas.) Costs of production however do continue to esculate. The website is really only there as a companion to compliment the book and assist our advertisers further. Having said that however, had you purchased a membership...you would have found that the marina details on-line are expanded.

In any case, I would be interested to know, what in your view would improve the publication. We are always endeavouring to enhance and improve. Therefore all constructive comments are most welcome. :)

Steven,

I think I made it clear that I think your (paper) directory is excellent. I have recommended it to many of my cruising friends and used it to good effect during our cruise north!
However.... your web business strategy is opposite to other web businesses. They give their content away for free on the net and charge for their publications. By putting a credit card barrier up for your customers, you are reducing your site traffic. And consequently, you are foregoing an opportunity to make yourself the premier site in this category and share in a boom in targetted advertising (Google's Australian revenue this year is $100 Million).
